See Detailed Pictures: Eric Tabarly the ??Father of French Yachting?? began his seagoing career in the French Navy. Tabarly, an innovator in ocean racing yacht design, built boats to suit specific races and conditions. He named each boat Pen Duick (a Brenton word for a small seabird known as a tit). Pen Duick II, a 44' plywood ketch; Pen Duick III, a 57' aluminum schooner; Pen Duick IV, a 68' aluminum trimaran: Pen Duick V, a 35' water-ballasted monohull and Pen Duick VI a 74' ketch. In 1998 he set sail for Belfast, N. Ireland to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Pen Duick when he was struck by the gaff and knocked overboard. He wore no life jacket and was unable to grasp the lifering thrown towards him. His body was recovered 5 weeks later near where he had fallen overboard. Click for details
